Safari of Apple

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple Inc. First released as a public beta on 7 January 2003 on the company's Mac OS X operating system, it became Apple's default browser beginning with Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther". Apple has also made Safari the native browser for the iPhone OS. A version of Safari for the Microsoft Windows operating system first released on June 11, 2007 supports both Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. The current stable release of the browser is 4.0.3 for Mac OS X and Windows. Safari had a 4.24% market share in September 2009. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Safari supports AAT (Apple Advanced Typography) fonts, so we can use this web browser for reading Khmer language website which is created by Khmer Unicode AAT Fonts.

Khmer Unicode in Mac OS

I am just successful to merge AAT feature of Apple and OpenType features of Adobe and Microsoft to one font file, so in the near future, my Khmer OS fonts can be used in both OS, Windows and Mac OS. But for MS Word 2008 on Macintosh, we need to turn on ligature function by checked Enable all ligatures.... from Format/Font menu. Please see the picture.

Web fonts for open source, a view from Cambodia

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has released new version of report about CSS3 show how the font resource load dynamically, that can help user agents to read all contents on WebPages without installing font on their computers.

For English, French, Chinese and many other languages have large speakers; they can recognize the benefit from this method that can keep original layout of contents for user agent to read the webpage. But for the language of small group, there are not in operating system of computer, this report is quite meaningful, an example, for Khmer language in Cambodia.

Embedded OpenType, don’t need to install fonts

Many years ago, webmasters in Cambodia were familiar with the term of “TrueDoc” from Bitstream and Embedded OpenType (EOT) from Microsoft, which can help the user agents, read text on website via loading font from server, without font installation in computer, but it doesn’t work with prominent open source web browser as Mozilla Firefox. Especially, EOT fonts work with Microsoft Internet Explorer only.

Now there is a lot of big website in Khmer language from Cambodia and abroad use EOT font, such as http://www.rfa.org/khmer of Radio Free Asia, http://khmer.radioaustralia.net.au/ of ABC Radio Australia, http://www.rfi.fr/ of Radio French International, http://khmer.ka-set.info/ of Ka-set newspaper, etc…

Also a well-known and old website http://www.everyday.com.kh/ which is interested in teenagers in Cambodia, has also provide Khmer email, use EOT based on legacy font which was created in 1990s. It is favorable for user agents who have MS Internet Explorer, but it still creates difficulties for Firefox web browser’s readers.

Web fonts for Firefox and Safari

According to W3C’s recent report post on their website in June 18, 2009, new term was used and described similar to TrueDoc and Embedded OpenType before, is Web fonts and the way to make them load dynamically from server to user agent’s computer, just upload the font server and add CSS code to webpage. Compare to Embedded OpenType from Microsoft, it is easier, because we don’t need any special tool to convert the font for server.
The fonts for upload to server still keep the original extension, example font.ttf, font.oft or font.svg, etc…

To use a downloadable font call Khmer OS:

The user agent will download Khmer OS and use it when rendering text within paragraph elements.

Right now, above CSS works with Firefox and Safari only. We also can add more CSS for Internet Explorer in the same time, after create EOT font by using WEFT of Microsoft.

The Fight for the Future of Cloud Computing

While Google and Microsoft have each developed very different business models and attitudes toward consumers and the enterprise, both companies are preparing to clash when it comes to how the world’s cloud computing infrastructure develops in the next 10 years. While Google and Microsoft might fight for dominance in the cloud, it’s not clear which company will win or if a third company might succeed.

ORLANDO, Fla. – When it comes to building out cloud computing infrastructures in the next two years, two of the world’s largest and most formidable IT companies – Google and Microsoft – are preparing to pour money and resources into developing significantly different models of how this type of computing should look and feel.

While it’s not surprising that Google and Microsoft are preparing to clash in other fields besides search and advertising, the two companies’ attitudes toward the cloud and the different approaches were dissected at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo here.

At its most basic, cloud computing offers customers the ability to have their applications supported by third-party vendors and those applications are then delivered to the user through the Internet. Enterprises, such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft, can also develop their own cloud computing infrastructures for their internal applications.

While the cloud is still a somewhat undefined area, the types of technology that Google and Microsoft are developing could shift the way businesses, and even consumers, use the cloud for their needs. Part of this clash for the future of the cloud comes from the different business models that Google and Microsoft developed. While Microsoft has worked mainly in the enterprise and built its reputation on its operating systems and offerings such as the Office suite, Google has been more consumer focused and has relied on advertising revenue to bolster its search capabilities.

In the case of Microsoft, David Smith, a Gartner Fellow, believes that Microsoft is looking to become a force in both the internal cloud, which businesses will build to support their own applications and computing resources, and the external cloud, which are developed by third-party service providers such as AT&T.

“With Microsoft, the goal is to support both in a sort of hybrid model that takes advantage of both models,” said Smith. “Virtually all Microsoft software until recently, especially for enterprises, has been either client-based or on-premise software. However, they are gradually moving much of that to a cloud offering.”

The evidence of that shift in strategy, Smith said, is a number of new products Microsoft has brought into the market or will bring in the coming years. These include Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online, Live Mesh and platforms such as “Oslo” and “Titan.”

For Google, the opposite is true. Most of the search giant’s applications products are offsite on the server level. At the same time, more and more applications are being developed and deployed within Web browsers, which appears to have been one of the motivations behind Google’s launch of Chrome earlier this year.

“The reason for Chrome is to stimulate development in this space, to speed up Java script, to speed up off-line support and there are some reasons that are harder to understand but they are there and they have to do with the control of advertising,” said Smith.

At the same time, Tom Austin, also a Gartner Fellow, sees Google developing its own platforms for the cloud, such as Google App Engine, which allows for the building and hosting of applications on Google Web servers. In addition, Google has turned to IBM to help it develop technology, especially within the cloud, that will give those applications more of an enterprise edge.

In the march toward the cloud, Google and Microsoft are being driven by five technologies, according to Gartner. These are SAAS (software as a service), open source, Web 2.0, consumerization and “global class,” which is a new way to deliver computing services.

What might leave some industry observers frustrated is that the battle between Microsoft and Google might not leave a clear winner, according to Gartner. Google and Microsoft might wind up splitting this new space between them with each playing to their strengths. At the same time, a third company might hold the key toward developing the cloud. Smith and Austin reminded the audiences that Yahoo remains a factor in all these decisions, and Smith believes that a deal for Microsoft to buy Yahoo will still happen.

As for IT managers, Smith and Austin urged them to begin evaluating and testing Web-based applications now as these applications are still being developed.

Quark announces QuarkXPress 8

Quark on Thursday announced the next major version of its page-layout software, QuarkXPress 8. The new version, which will be available in the next 60 days, will offer many enhancements including a new interface and built-in Flash authoring.

According to Quark, the QuarkXPress product team spent a lot of time with designers to determine how they work and figure out what to change in QuarkXPress 8 to help them.

“We really sat down to change QuarkXPress and change the number of mouse clicks it takes to get things done,” Tim Banister, General Manager of Desktop Technology for Quark, told Macworld. “Really, we went back to the fundamentals.”

Part of what Quark did to make things more intuitive is to incorporate smart behavior in its tools. This lets users access the tool they need without having to switch back and forth between them all the time.

New Bézier pen tools let users draw illustrations directly in QuarkXPress, while buttons for instant access to master pages and exporting to PDF, EPS, SWF, and HTML, plus new split-view buttons, enhanced contextual menus, and customizable active pasteboards highlight workspace enhancements aimed at making the a designer's job easier.

You can now drag text or pictures into QuarkXPress from Adobe Bridge, Apple's iPhoto, or any program that supports drag and drop. You can also drag content from QuarkXPress to Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Word, and other software for direct editing.

Quark also focused on typographic control in the new version. According to the company, QuarkXPress 8 is the first page-layout program to offer hanging characters with paragraph-by-paragraph control.

Because Quark realizes that designers need the ability to use content in different forms and locations, QuarkXPress 8 lets users simultaneously design for print, Web, and Flash.

Among the other improvements users will find in the new version are native Illustrator file import, WYSIWYG font rendering, advanced guide management, Item Styles to control formatting for multiple items, support for importing PDF version 1.7 and earlier, and Ghent PDF Workgroup (GWG)-based output styles and GWG-based job jackets support.

Quark did not announce pricing, but said users who purchase or upgrade to QuarkXPress 7 between May 29, 2008 and August 1, 2008 are eligible to upgrade to QuarkXPress 8 for free. Also, any users who purchased upgrades to or full versions of QuarkXPress 7 between May 1, 2008, and May 29, 2008 are also be eligible for a free upgrade to QuarkXPress 8.

LinkFixerPlus for Adobe InDesign

LinkFixerPlus enables users of Adobe InDesign to easily move or rename InDesign files, in batch, along with their linked files, without causing broken links.
